Intro - Simeon was righteous, devout, and looking for the Messiah.  He was led by the Holy Spirit. God promised him he would not die until he had seen the Messiah.  Its fair to assume then Simeon was a student of the Scriptures. As the Psalmist says, God’s Word has a way of keeping us from sin, Ps.119:11.  And it also was his source of information on the coming Messiah. One of the things the Messiah was to bring was consolation to Israel.
