Newsletter May 2022

“Screen Free Week.” is May 2-8.  We will kick off the week with a family fun night at school on May 2nd.  We will have games and different activities as examples of ideas for things you can to at home during the week instead of going on screens.  We invite all students and families to come to family fun night from 6:00-7:30.  We will begin with a potluck meal, so please bring a potluck item to share.  Tableware and drinks will be provided.  After the meal, we will have different activities set up for children and families to try.  This will be the kick off to our annual Screen Free Week where we encourage kids to put down the screens and do other activities for the week.  It’s been said that kids can have been on screens for 7 hours a day, which is shocking.  This effects their view of the world, and leads to depression and a sedentary lifestyle.  We encourage you as parents to use this opportunity at school, to tell your kids to put the screens down and try other activities.  Get active, try new or old hobbies, go outside, and do something with your kids for Mother’s Day, you won’t regret it.

We have been noticing in all of our classrooms, a decrease in respect for each other, adults, and property.  We have also heard from many of you at conferences about kids being unkind to one another.  We have noticed this too.  We have been talking to the kids about these issues, and have been teaching lessons during class about kindness, caring, respect, and gratitude.  We would appreciate it if you could have conversations with your kids at home about respect and kindness.  Please try to lead the conversations by what your child can do to show kindness and respect no matter what others are doing.  It won’t do much good to let your child tell you about how others are being mean and disrespectful.  We need to teach them that we cannot control what others do, only how we react, and how each of us can do the right thing no matter what is going on around us.  We hope and pray that with the continual reinforcement from home as well as at school, we will see these issues improve. Thank you for your support, and please let us know of any concerns you have.

We will be singing at the National Day of Prayer Service on Thursday, May 5.  Please bring your kids at 6:50 and have them sit in the front row with the teachers if they can come to this service at Faith Lutheran.   This is a more casual service, so they can wear nice casual clothing.  For example, girls can wear a comfortable dress, skirt with a nice top, or nice jeans/slacks (no holes) with a nice top.  Boys can wear nice jeans/pants (no holes) with a nice button down shirt or polo (no writing).  Thank you for considering bringing your children to this service.  I will be asking for a count of who is coming at the beginning of the week.

The last day of school is May 26.  We will have an awards program at 10:30 followed by an all school picnic provided by the school board.  After the picnic, school is dismissed for the summer.

Field day at FCS will be Tuesday, May 24.  We will be looking for volunteers to help out again.
